Five Pillars Yoga

Aby Gonzales

Where are you from?
I was born and raised in the Philippines.

Who inspires you?
My students. Through them, I see the manifestation of the benefits of this practice.

Do you have a spirit animal?
The Iguana

Current favorite inspirational quote?
Range is of the ego. Form is of the soul. — Alan Finger

How would you describe your teaching style?
I start slow to open up the body intelligently — intention, breath, joint work, flow through a series of asanas with repetition to help the body go deeper, lead up to a peak pose and then finish with a delicious restorative Savasana! Plus lots of hands on adjustments.

Silence or music during the class?
Music! It affects the mood and sets the tone for the entire class. I play whatever inspires me at the moment and what theme I am working on. You can expect anything from Philip Glass to Lady Gaga.

Which posture helps you “Go Deep?”
Savasana. It reminds me what the point of the practice is — finding stillness in the mind to the best of our abilities.

Complete the sentence: I practice because…
It keeps me grounded and reminds me to see how beautiful life is when it becomes tough sometimes.

Which of the Five Pillars most resonates with you (right now) and why?
Right Intention. How I show up in the world is a direct reflection of who I am and how I serve it.

Personal Motto or Mantra?
We cannot live our daily lives in the realm of pure ideas, cocooned from sense experience. — J.M. Coetzee

Favorite Sutra?
By cultivating an attitude of friendship toward those who are happy, compassion toward those in distress, joy toward those who are virtuous, and equanimity toward those who are non virtuous, lucidity arises in the mind. — Yoga Sutra I.33
