Five Pillars Yoga

Mary Sabo

Where are you from?
I grew up on Long Island spending my summers in Southampton and I’m lucky enough to call the east end home year-round now.

How did you come to Yoga? How and when did your yoga practice begin?
I took my first class in my middle school gym at 13 years old. I distinctly remember coming out of tree pose and having this feeling of pure bliss (aka the “yoga high”) and knew back then there was something magical about it. My practice truly began the year after I graduated college. I was fresh out of college with a degree in theater and a job as a waitress. I was overwhelmed, exhausted and lost emotionally. I was working 12 hour days and partying too hard. One morning I woke up after 3 hours sleep and had to be at work, but was so anxious that I couldn’t stop shaking and crying. At that moment, in my kitchen I got into a downward dog and just cried and breathed my way to grounded. I would say that was the moment that I took yoga out of the studio, off of my mat and into my everyday life and world. That was almost a decade ago.

Who inspires you?
My parents. They are an amazing example of what a strong relationship looks like and are stellar examples of human beings in that they have had their struggles but have always put their relationship, faith and family first.

Silence or music during the class?
Music. Music is the first part of the puzzle for me when it comes to planning my classes. I create each playlist before I sequence, because I find my inspiration for the class plan often comes organically once I feel the rhythm of each note and start moving on my mat. My instagram name is @the_singingyogi… I bring my guitar to most of my classes and play acoustic at the end. There is something magical about the sounds that arise in yoga studios because the acoustics are so good!

How would you describe your teaching style?
Light-hearted, physical, organic, fluid + FUN!

Complete the sentence: I practice because…
Yoga is like Chapstick – once I experienced how much better it made me feel – I could never go back.

Which of the Five Pillars most resonates with you (right now) and why?
Right Intention. I look at this pillar and feel that for myself, everything else stems from this one.  I can go out to help others but if my intention behind it is rooted in self-centeredness and only thinking about what I can gain from the experience then I am not really serving the highest capacity.  And in the opposite direction if I am only going out to help others because I don’t want to turn inward because of something I need to look at within myself then I am not being honest in the work I am doing at that moment. For me, it all starts here.

Personal Motto or Mantra?
In the middle of the fear (or pain – depending on the situation), lies the existence of opportunity.
